Edgewater’s Sound since 1960

In 1960, concerned community members banded together as the Edgewater Community Council (ECC) to safeguard and improve the quality of life in their neighborhood.

In the decades since, ECC has been a champion for our community by:

  • Fighting absentee landlords and drug houses
  • Preserving hundreds of units of affordable housing
  • Helping to form more than a dozen other community organizations
  • Working to secure historic sites for public use
  • Organizing mass property tax appeals
  • Coordinating neighborhood cleaning and greening activities, among many other efforts

Our Focus Areas:

Public Safety

ECC’s Public Safety Initiative engages the community and government leaders, landlords, residents, and the Chicago Police Department to create resources and programming designed to improve public safety and create a vital and aware neighborhood presence. Activities include “positive loitering” campaigns, courtroom advocacy, and coordination with and among CAPS and CPD Beat Facilitators.

ECC works with the Edgewater Environmental Sustainability Project(EESP) to “green” Edgewater by providing resources, programming, and volunteer opportunities to foster sustainable community living. EESP also provides residents with awareness-building forums around recycling, solar energy, and water/air quality.

Community Development

ECC’s Community Planning & Development Committee works to ensure that the perspectives of Edgewater’s residents and visitors are considered and addressed during the planning and development process. The committee’s community-focused efforts include championing community participation in the Aldermanic review process as well as hosting community awareness forums on key planning and development issues.
